The USS Battleship NORTH CAROLINA offers a fun, unique experience for families. Located in Wilmington, North Carolina, the battleship overlooks the Cape Fear River and beautiful downtown area. This historic ship was the first of ten fast battleships to join American fleet in World World II, and was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon at the time of her commissioning. This historical site was home to many young men from all across the nation during the Second World War.
The self-guided attraction is open every day, including all holidays, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The Southeast Tourism Society (STS) even named the USS North Carolina Battleship one of the Top 20 Events in the Southeast in 2011. Many educational programs are also held throughout the year, and include behind the scenes tours of un-restored parts of the ship. Some of these programs include Hidden Battleship, Behind the Hatch, Design & Damage Control and Power Plant Program. Times and dates for these programs can be found on the battleship’s website.
School groups are encouraged to visit, and one chaperone per ten students is admitted free. (Just be sure to make reservations to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.) Pre-visit materials are also available upon request. Contact the battleship for more information at http://www.battleshipnc.com or call (910) 251-5797.
